Freshmen Lead Way For UH At UH-Hilo Invitational

Final Results

KAMUELA, Hawai'i – University of Hawai'i freshman #T.J. Kua# shot a final round even-par 72 to finish at 229 (76-81-72) as the Warrior golf team concluded the UH-Hilo Invitational in 17th place Friday at the Mauna Lani North Course.
 
Kua, of Lihue, Kaua'i, tied for 60th place. Fellow freshmen Pono Calip and Jared Sawada were the team's next highest finishers. Calip shot a final round six-over 78 to finish 239 (79-82-78) and a tie for 87th while Sawada shot a two-over 74 on Friday for a three-round total of 240 (81-85-74) and 89th place.
 
Junior Robert Berton tied for 91st at 242 (81-80-81) while sophomore Kamden Brakel tied for 98th at 251 (78-88-85).
 
Second-ranked Southern California ran away with the team title after posting a three-day total of 13-under 851 (285-284-282), 11 strokes better than runner-up Washington (281-292-289=862). Individually, UW's Nick Taylor held off USC's Jamie Lovemark by one stroke after shooting a two-under 70 on Friday. Taylor captured the tournament title with a three-round score of six-under 210.
 
Three UH golfers competed as individuals – senior Chase Bingham (81-87-78=246/T-94th), sophomore Daniel Soglanich (87-83-81=251/T-98th), and senior Cody Pewarchuk (87-92-79=258/100th).
 
The Warriors return to Honolulu to host the 33rd annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Feb. 18-20, at the Leilehua Golf Course. The 16-team field features defending champion and No. 42 Auburn. Also in the field are No. 13 Arkansas, No. 15 Colorado State, No. 17 UNLV, and No. 36 Texas A&M.
