HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team dropped the second match of a two-match series with seventh-ranked Stanford, 30-27, 30-21, 30-26, Saturday night, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Warriors (3-10, 2-8 MPSF) suffered their fourth straight loss and were swept by the Cardinal at home for the first time since 1992.
Head coach Mike Wilton tinkered with his rotation, starting three different lineups for each set.
Steven Grgas led the Warrior attack with 10 kills moving from middle blocker to the outside in Sets 2 and 3. Freshman
Gus Tuaniga added nine kills along with senior
Sean Carney, UH's regular starting setter, who started at outside hitter for the second straight night.
Joshua Walker came off the bench and added nine kills in two games.
Spencer McLachlin led the Cardinal (11-7, 7-6) with 15 kills. Erik Shoji, the youngest son of UH women's head volleyball coach
Dave Shoji, had a match-high 23 digs. Kawika Shoji, Dave's oldest son, dished out 39 assists and had 15 digs.
The teams traded sideouts for much of Set 1 until the Cardinal reeled off three straight with the help of a pair of Brandon Williams kills for a 21-19 lead. The Warriors rallied and tied the set at 21 and again at 24 and 26. The Cardinal took a 28-26 lead on a McLachlin kill and Kawika Shoji ace and ended it with a Brad Lawson kill.
Stanford jumped out to a 5-2 lead and extended it to 9-5 in Set 2. But a pair of Grgas kills and Cardinal hitting errors allowed the Warriors to tie it at 11. Stanford regained their composure and used a 12-3 run, including eight straight at one point, to take an insurmountable 23-14 lead.
It was all Stanford in Set 3 as the Cardinal led 10-6 and 15-10 at the midway point. The Warriors got as close at two at 20-18 but Stanford finished off the game and the match, 30-26.
The Warriors return to the court next week as they host UC Santa Barbara in a two-match MPSF series, Thursday, March 5 and Friday, March 6. First serve is 7:00 p.m. each night.
