Rainbow Wahine Soccer Falls 1-0 To San Jose State In WAC Opener

Box Score

WAIPAHU, O'ahu – Despite an 18-4 advantage in shots, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team (4-7-1, 0-1 WAC) fell to the San Jose State Spartans (6-4-0, 1-0) 1-0 at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium Friday.

Britta Bourne took nine shots, including four on goal, to lead the Rainbow Wahine. Ambree Ako and Brittani Lum both fired three shots, with one on goal each.

SJSU scored the only goal of the match in the 28th minute, on their first shot of the night. Shanelle Furner flicked a header into the far post after a long cross by Angela Santoro. That would prove to be the Spartans only shot of the first half, as UH out-shot San Jose State 12-1.

In the second half, Hawai'i continued to create chances, taking six shots, including three that were on goal. Even late in the match, UH had a couple shots to get a tie. But a shot by Lum in the 80th minute was blocked, and another by Bourne, with just 10 seconds left in the match, went wide, giving the Spartans the 1-0 victory.

The Rainbow Wahine continue WAC play on Sunday, Oct. 4, hosting Fresno State at 5 p.m. at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
