Late Penalty Kick Goal Hands UH Soccer 2-1 Loss At New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Allowing a penalty kick goal in overtime, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team (5-9-1, 1-3-0 WAC) fell to Western Athletic Conference leading New Mexico State (9-5-1, 4-0-1) 2-1 at Aggie Memorial Stadium Sunday.
 
After both teams played a scoreless first 82 minutes, a flurry of offense ensued late. NMSU's Crystal Burns scored in the 83rd minute on an 18-yard breakaway, giving the Aggies the 1-0 edge.
 
Ambree Ako, who finished with six shots and two on goal, then responded for UH in the 85th minute, scoring on a free kick to tie the match at 1-1, sending it into overtime.
 
Britta Bourne had a shot on goal early in the overtime period that was saved. After a shot by the Aggies was saved by Kanani Taaca in the 95th minute, Mari Punzal got off a shot that went wide. Punzal was then called for a foul in the box in the 100th minute, leading to a penalty kick by Jazmin Cardoso for the Aggie victory.
 
UH will return home to host its final two home matches on Oct. 23 and 25, against Nevada and Utah State, at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Both matches will have 5 p.m. starts.
