HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team went back-and-forth with Utah State on Sunday night, changing leads five times in the second half, but the Aggies came out on top in the end, beating the Rainbow Wahine 52-43 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UH held the halftime lead against Utah State, and in the second half the two teams fought hard, with the score being tied once and the five lead changes. The Aggies biggest lead of the game was the final score.
With the loss UH falls to 3-16 overall and 0-6 in WAC play. Utah State improved to 10-10 overall and 4-3 in conference action.
The Rainbow Wahine will get a chance to avenge the loss on Friday, as UH faces Utah State for a second straight game, this time in Logan, Utah at 7 p.m. MT.
Offensively UH was led by
Megan Tinnin, who scored 14 points and added six rebounds.
Rebecca Dew scored a career-high 11 points in 21 minutes off the bench and
Tara Hittle had six points and 12 rebounds.
In the opening half, the Rainbow Wahine and Aggies went back-and-forth, with the score being tied four times over the first 20 minutes. UH took the 23-21 halftime lead on a
Leilani Galdones jumper as time expired.
As a team UH played solid defense, holding Utah State to 28.6 percent shooting in the first half. The Rainbow Wahine shot 30.8 percent and outrebounded the Aggies 20-12.
The Rainbow Wahine hit the road for two WAC games next week, beginning with a game against Utah State on Friday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. MT. After facing the Aggies for the second straight game, UH will face Idaho on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. PT.
