Women’s Basketball Battles Fresno State Tough In Home Loss

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team kept battling Friday night against Fresno State, but eventually dropped the game 71-45 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
 
The Rainbow Wahine hung tough with the Bulldogs early in the first half, and after a run opened up the game before halftime, UH kept in close in the second half.
 
With the loss UH falls to 3-15 overall and 0-5 in WAC play. Fresno State improved to 13-6 overall and 4-2 in conference action.
 
Offensively the Rainbow Wahine were led by Megan Tinnin, who scored 14 points and added four rebounds. Keisha Kanekoa added eight points and five rebounds and Jennifer Hamilton scored six points off the bench.
 
Overall UH shot 38.3 percent from the field, while Fresno State shot 40.3 percent. A big difference in the game came from behind the 3-point line. UH sent 2-for-6, while Fresno State went 12-for-38.
 
In the opening half, the Rainbow Wahine hung with the Bulldogs for the first 10 minutes, but Fresno State started hitting 3-pointers and opened the lead to 40-20.
 
UH offensively had nine players score as they subbed five players in and out during the first half. As a team the Rainbow Wahine shot 40.7 percent from the field, while Fresno State shot 43.9 percent.
 
In the first half Fresno State went 7-for-11 from 3-point range, while UH went 0-for-2.
 
UH concludes its three-game WAC home stand Sunday, Jan. 23 when it faces Utah State at 5 p.m.
