HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team held a five-point lead midway through the second half Friday afternoon against Pepperdine, but couldn't hold on as the Waves rallied to beat the Rainbow Wahine 65-52 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
In the first game of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic, UH trailed Pepperdine at halftime, but used a 14-2 second half run to take a 45-40 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. But Pepperdine responded once again to take the lead and the victory.
Pepperdine will face Colorado on Saturday in the second game of the Rainbow Wahine Classic at 3 p.m. UH will wrap up the classic on Sunday against Colorado at 5 p.m.
With the loss the Rainbow Wahine fall to 3-9 on the season, while the Waves improved to 7-6. Colorado carries a 6-4 record into the classic.
Offensively Friday afternoon, UH was led by
Breanna Arbuckle, who scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds off the bench. Arbuckle also had three blocks and two steals.
Playing in her first game of the year,
Tara Hittle scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds in 21 minutes of action.
Megan Tinnin added eight points and
Catherine Cho had seven points and seven rebounds, playing all 40 minutes.
UH shot the ball well for the game, especially in the first half, shooting 50 percent from the field. But the Rainbow Wahine committed 33 turnovers for the game as Pepperdine had 20 steals.
