ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Hawai`i women's soccer team picked up their first victory of the season, beating Drake 4-3 in double overtime Sunday afternoon in the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Rainbow Wahine received an unassisted goal by
Kelli-Anne Chang in the 103
rd minute from the top of the box, ending the sudden-death overtime. With the win UH moves to 1-2-0 on the season.
For UH it was the second overtime game out of the first three to start the season. On Sunday, the Rainbow Wahine allowed three goals in the first half, but shut down the Bulldogs the rest of the game.
The first goal of the game for Drake came on a UH own goal, after a failed clearing attempt. The Rainbow Wahine answered in the 8
th minute when
Taryn Fukuroku scored her first goal of the season. Fukuroku's goal was assisted by
Chelsea Deptula.
After Drake scored in the 30
th minute,
Nicole Mikula tied the game in the 42
nd minute, scoring her first goal of the season. The Bulldogs scored the final goal of the first half six seconds after Mikula's goal, giving them a 3-2 halftime lead.
Drake carried its lead into the 83rd minute of the game, but Deptula scored her second goal of the season on an assist by Mikula off of a free kick, tying the game at 3-3.
Offensively, the Rainbow Wahine took 22 shots compared to Drake's nine and UH had seven corner kicks in the game. Fukuroku and Chang each had five shots,
Ambree Ako added four shots and Mikula had three.
The Rainbow Wahine return to action at 7 p.m. (MST) Tuesday, Sept. 9 when they face host New Mexico in the final game of the New Mexico Classic.
