STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i women's soccer team scored a season-high five goals and shut out an opponent for the first time this season, defeating San Francisco 5-0 in the final game of the Pacific Fall Tournament Sunday in Stockton, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine scored three goals in the first half, and played solid defense, holding the Dons to seven shots in the game. With the victory, UH improves to 2-3-1 on the season. The Rainbow Wahine finished their four-game road trip with a 2-1-1 record.
UH got on the scoreboard first when
Vanessa Bailey scored her first goal of the season in the 22
nd minute off an assist by
Kelli-Anne Chang. Eight minutes later,
Taryn Fukuroku scored her third goal of the season off another assist by Chang.
Tehane Higa scored the final goal of the first half for the Rainbow Wahine off an assist by
Rachel Domingo in the 34
th minute, giving UH a 3-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Higa scored her second goal of the game and her second of the season off a penalty kick in the 69th minute. Chang rounded out the scoring, recording her second goal of the season in the 87th minute. Chang finished the game with four points coming on one goal and two assists.
Offensively UH recorded 17 shots, and held San Francisco to seven shots. The combination of
Kori Lu and
Nicole McClure shut out the Dons in net. Lu played the first 45 minutes, while McClure shut out San Francisco in the second half.
The Rainbow Wahine began the road trip in Albuquerque, N.M., finishing the New Mexico Classic 1-0-1. UH then travelled to Stockton, Calif., where it went 1-1-0. The Rainbow Wahine picked up wins over Drake and San Francisco, tied New Mexico and lost to Pacific. UH scored 13 goals in four road games and have now scored 17 goals in six games.
UH returns home to host the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium, which begins Thursday, Sept. 18. The Rainbow Wahine will face Montana at 7 p.m. on Thursday to open the classic and finishes the classic hosting UC Santa Barbara at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21. In between, Montana and UC Santa Barbara will face each other at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19.
