Box Score

RUSTON, La. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (29-30) fell the Fresno State Bulldogs (36-27) 11-4 in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at J.C. Love Field Saturday. Jason Breckley (2-2) got the win for the Bulldogs while Matt Daly took the loss for UH.

Landon Hernandez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run while Matt Roquemore hit his first career homer. Jeffrey Van Doornum added a 1-for-3 game with one RBI while Greg Garcia went 1-for-3 with a double and a run.

Both pitchers kept the offenses off the scoreboard for the first three innings, with the Rainbows being aided by two inning-ending double plays. Erik Wetzel hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, breaking the scoreless tie to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 edge.

The Hawai`i bats then awoke in the top of the sixth. Hernandez and Roquemore led off the inning with back-to-back home runs to left. After a couple walks that chased Justin Miller to the dugout, Brandon Haislet sacrificed the runners over to second and third. Van Doornum then hit a RBI-single to right to score a run and give UH a 3-1 lead. The 'Bows looked to add to their lead, hitting a long fly ball to right. But Fresno State rightfielder Steve Detwiler made the catch and threw a strike to the plate, catching Jonathan Hee at the plate.

The Bulldogs carried the momentum of the defensive gem to the plate in the bottom of the sixth. Wetzel hit a two-run double to tie the game, then scored on a single by Steve Susdorf. Then the Bulldogs got two, two-run home runs by Alan Ahmady and Steve Detwiler, totalling seven runs in the inning to make it 8-3 in favor of the 'Dawgs.

Fresno State then put it away in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs, including another two-run homer by Ahmady, making it 11-3.

Ryan Asato added a run in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly to make the final 11-4.

The 'Bows will play the winner of the Sacramento State and Nevada in the 7 p.m. (2 p.m. HST) game.
