CHENEY, Wash. - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team won its third match of the 2008 season with a 4-3 victory over Eastern Washington Tuesday afternoon in Cheney, Washington.
The Rainbow Wahine (3-16) jumped off to a great start by winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The team of sophomore Sophie Kobuch and senior Chloe Bihag slipped past Kasey Knox and Amanda Mankovits, 8-6, at the No. 1 court. The duo of freshmen Natasha Zorec and Jennifer Goldman blew by Sarah Leuenberger and Marie Demerath, 8-3, at the No. 2 position.
UH secured three of the six singles matches to capture the dual match. Winners included Kobuch, Zorec, and Goldman. Kobuch, ranked No. 79 in the latest ITA singles rankings, crushed Knox at the No. 1 court, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2, Zorec beat Leuenberger in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. With the match score tied 3-3, Goldman clinched victory for the Rainbow Wahine by winning the deciding match and outlasting Mankovits in two close sets, 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 3 position.
UH will conclude its four-match road trip against fellow WAC foe, Idaho on Wednesday, April 16.
