LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (25-27, 17-14 WAC) defeated the New Mexico State Aggies (26-28, 13-14) 17-10 in the first game of the doubleheader at Presley Askew Field Saturday. Joshua Schneider (4-2) got the win, allowing two runs in 4.0 innings while Dillon Smith (2-5) took the loss for NMSU.

Brandon Haislet had a career day, going 5-for-5 with a career-high seven RBI, three runs, a home run and a double. Jonathan Hee went 4-for-6 with a career-high five runs and one RBI. Matthew Roquemore went 4-for-5 with three runs, a doubles and one RBI while Jeffrey Van Doornum went 3-for-6 with three RBI and a double. Landon Hernandez also played well, going 3-for-6 with two runs and one RBI.

The Rainbows got on the scoreboard early as Haislet and Van Doornum drove in runs back-to-back before UH scored another on a bases-loaded walk, pushing Hawai`i ahead 3-0 in the top of the first. The Aggies would score a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning, making it 3-1.

Hawai`i added three more in the top of the second as Van Doornum hit a two-run double before Kevin Macdonald hit a sacrifice fly to get UH's lead to 6-1. Hee drove in a run before Haislet hit a two-run single to give the 'Bows their third-straight three-run inning, making it 9-1.

NMSU added a couple runs in the bottom of the third and another run in the fourth to get the game within reach at 9-4.

Haislet hit a two-run homer to left to get UH's lead back up to 11-4. But as the Rainbows have come to find out, a seven-run lead was not safe at Presley Askew Field. The Aggies put up four runs, including two on a home run by Franky Busani, in the bottom of the fifth. They then added a run in the bottom of the sixth, cutting it back to an 11-9 game.

UH added three runs in the seventh, including a two-run single by Macdonald to get it to 14-9. NMSU added a run in the bottom of the seventh, only to see Hawai`i add two more in the top of the eighth and another in the ninth, making the final 17-10.

The second game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5:10 p.m. (1:10 p.m. HST)
