HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (16-21, 8-8 WAC) won the series-finale over the New Mexico State Aggies (16-17, 5-6) 5-1 in front of a crowd of 3,492 in the second game of the doubleheader at Les Murakami Stadium Saturday, giving head coach
Mike Trapasso his 200th career victory.
Cory Kahn (2-0) led a staff effort, going 3.1 innings, allowing just one run to get the win. Tyler Sturdevant (4-3) took the loss for NMSU.
Brandon Haislet led the way, going 2-for-3 with one RBI, one run and two walks. Jeffrey Van Doornum added a 1-for-3 game with two runs while Vinnie Catricala went 1-for-3 with a run and a walk.
The Rainbows got the scoring started in the second inning as they scored two runs to go ahead early. Meanwhile, UH's combination of Alex Bates, Kahn and Sam Spangler kept the Aggies off the board for seven innings.
The Rainbows scored again in the bottom of the seventh as Haislet drew a bases-loaded walk, pushing UH's lead to 3-0. NMSU finally got on the board in the top of the eighth as Joseph Scaperotta drove in a run. But Hawai`i got a couple more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, on a single to right by Matthew Roquemore, making the final 5-1.
The Rainbows will next host Nevada for a four-game WAC series from April 18-20 at Les Murakami Stadium.
