Rainbows Drop Tough Game To No. 11 Long Beach State, 4-3 In 12 Innings

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (5-7) fell to the No. 11 Long Beach State 49ers (7-2) 4-3 in 12 innings, in front of a crowd of 2,673 at Les Murakami Stadium Friday. Matthew Daly (2-1) took the loss, allowing a run in 4.1 innings of relief. Nick Vincent (3-0) picked up the win in relief for the Beach. Bryan Shaw earned his third save of the year.

Brandon Haislet led UH, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Vinnie Catricala hit his third home run of the season while both Jonathan Hee and Derek DuPree were 1-for-4 with a run.

Starter Jared Alexander pitched really well, allowing two runs on three hits in 7.0 innings, striking out six, but earned a no-decision.

Long Beach State looked to score early, placing runners on first and third with just one out in the second. But Alexander got the next batter to hit into a double play, keeping the game scoreless.

Catricala broke the silence in the bottom of the fourth, blasting a solo home to left-center, giving Hawai`i a 1-0 edge. Haislet then hit a two-run double in the sixth, bringing in Jonathan Hee and Derek DuPree, to give the 'Bows a 3-0 advantage.

But the 49ers finally got to Alexander in the eighth, putting together back-to-back hits to chase him out of the game. Jayson Kramer came in and struck out the next two batters, but then gave up a hit to Shane Peterson, making it 3-1. After hitting the next batter to load the bases, Kramer gave way to Daly. Daly gave up a two-run single to John Hill, tying the game at 3-3.

Daly again loaded the bases in the ninth, but got out of a jam to send the game into extra innings. Hawai`i made the first threat in the extra frames, as DuPree and Haislet drew back-to-back walks with just one out. But Vincent came in and induced a couple of flyball outs, keeping the score tied.

LBSU would then score on a RBI-double by Peterson in the top of the 12th, making it 4-3. UH had its chance in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't string anything together, keeping the final score at 4-3.

The two teams continue their series tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. before the final at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday, March 9.
