NAMPA, Idaho - The University of Hawai`i women's track and field team continues to hold on to the top spot in the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championship standings after two days of competition, Friday at Jackson's Track at the Idaho Sports Complex. The Rainbow Wahine picked up 33 more team points and their 53-point total nearly equals the team's point total of a year ago.
Behind UH in the team standings are Nevada (40.5), Idaho (39), Utah State (28), Fresno State (26.5), Boise State (23), Louisiana Tech (16) and New Mexico State (8). Last season, the Rainbow Wahine finished in sixth place with a school-record 53.5 total points.
On Friday, the Rainbow Wahine captured two medals in the pole vault competition as Patricia Gauthier took silver and Jessica Custance won bronze. However, both Gauthier and Custance, as well as teammate Samantha Weaver and Boise State's Annelise Bertleson, cleared 12-6.75 (3.83m) but based on number of attempts, Bertleson grabbed gold and Weaver placed fourth.
Junior Thalia Amanakis competed in three events, advancing to Saturday's 60-meter hurdles and 800-meter finals by winning both heats with times of 8.71 seconds and 2:13.72, respectively. However she was disqualified in the prelims of the 400-meter dash, an event in which she had the WAC's top time this season.
UH scored five team points in the long jump after Mallory Gilbert finished sixth and Annett Wichmann placed seventh with leaps of 18-6 (5.64m) and 18-5.25 (5.62m), respectively.
In the weight throw, Meghan Weaver took fifth and scored four team points. It was the senior's first time throwing the 20-pound weight this season.
Senior Chantelle Wilder placed sixth in the 5000-meter run, clocking in at 18:07.91.
The meet concludes on Saturday as the Rainbow Wahine seek their first WAC Championship. Among the anticipated finals for UH are in the high jump, which the Rainbow Wahine ranked 1-2-3, triple jump, shot put, and 4x400-meter relay.
