HONOLULU - In its final competition before the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, the University of Hawai'i hosted the Terry Albritton Invitational Saturday at Cooke Field. The meet was the team's third and final Sunset Meet series during the indoor season.
Named after the late UH shot putter who once set the world record at an all-comers meet in Honolulu, the Rainbow Wahine track and field began honoring Albritton for the past several years since his sudden death.
One Cooke Field record was broken on Saturday as junior Thalia Amanakis continued her record-breaking 2008 campaign with an 8.71 second mark in the 60-meter hurdles. Amanakis already owns the school record in the event, which she broke last week in Seattle, Wash.
UH's high jumpers got once last jump in before the conference meet as Emily Sheppard and Mallory Gilbert each cleared 5-8.75 (1.75m). Both have already posted NCAA provisional marks this season and are tied for first in the WAC standings.
Senior Meghan Weaver, an NCAA provisional qualifier in the shot put, captured both the shot put and weight throw events. Weaver heaved 48-8.25 (14.84m) in the shot and 52-7.5 (16.04m) in the weight throw.
The Rainbow Wahine depart for Nampa, Idaho, site of the WAC Championships, on Wednesday. The pentathlon begins on Thursday, prelims on Friday and finals on Saturday. UH is looking to improve on its fifth place finish last season.
