SEATTLE - The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team had another strong showing at the Husky Classic Saturday at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor. UH athletes had one NCAA provisional mark, three school records and 11 personal bests at the meet.
Senior Mallory Gilbert tied the school record set by teammate Emily Sheppard two weeks ago in the same venue with after clearing 5-10.5 (1.79m) in the high jump to finish second overall. Sheppard and senior Annett Wichmann finished in a tie for fourth at 5-6.5 (1.69m).
Junior Thalia Amanakis continued her record-breaking 2008 season by breaking her own mark in the 60-meter hurdles. Two weeks ago, she posted a school-record time in the event and on Saturday she bested that mark (8.68) in qualifying. The Sydney, Australia native also set a personal best in the 800-meters (2:10.65).
UH's 4x400 meter relay team broke the school indoor mark with a time of 3:52.77. The team, comprised of Amanakis, Sam Whitehall, Renee Elbourne, and Candace Rosenthal, placed sixth.
Other Rainbow Wahine setting personal bests were Whitehall (2:22.14) and Rosenthal (2:26.17) in the 800-meter; Chantelle Wilder in the 3000-meter (9:55.36); Elbourne (36-9, 11.20m) and Mary Reeds (36-2, 11.02m) in the triple jump; Brittany Daniels (52-2.75, 15.92m) and Alana Faagai (42-10.75, 13.07m) in the weight toss; and Careena Onosai (41-1, 12.52m) in the shot put.
The Rainbow Wahine will next compete in the UW Open, Sunday, at Dempsey Indoor.
