Women’s Basketball Beats UC Irvine at ASU Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team beat UC Irvine 74-46 on Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the Arizona State Tournament at the Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
 
The Rainbow Wahine made a late run in the first half and carried its double-digit lead into the second half, pulling out their second victory of the season. UH improves to 2-7 overall and went 1-1 in the tournament.
 
Sophomore point guard Keisha Kanekoa was named to the all-tournament team following her second straight double-digit scoring game. It's the second all-tournament team Kanekoa has been named to this year.
 
Kankekoa recorded her first career double-double against UC Irvine, scoring 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Kanekoa also added six assists in the win.
 
UH also had a balanced scoring attack against the Anteaters with four players in double figures. Dita Liepkalne scored 12 points and senior Catherine Cho recorded a career-high 11 points, knocking down nine free throws. Sophomore Allie Patterson added 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds.
 
As a team UH shot 44 percent from the field and 31 percent from long range. The Rainbow Wahine had 10 players score and went 24-for-26 from the free throw line.
 
In the opening half, the Rainbow Wahine made two big runs to help take a 38-24 halftime lead. To start the game, UH went on a 10-2 run, similar to Saturday's game. But the Rainbow Wahine didn't let up towards the end of the half Sunday. UH went on a 13-0 run to take a 38-20 lead with three minutes remaining in the half.
 
Over the opening 20 minutes, the Rainbow Wahine were led by Kanekoa, who scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Liepkalne had eight points, including two 3-pointers and Allie Patterson and Catherine Cho each added six points.
 
UH shot 36 percent in the first half, but outrebounded UC Irvine 21-10, including eight offensive rebounds. The Rainbow Wahine went 5-for-12 from 3-point range and only committed eight turnovers.
 
The Rainbow Wahine take nearly two weeks off for the end of the semester and finals and return to action Dec. 19 when they face Washington State at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH will face Washington State in back-to-back games prior to the holiday break.
