HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team picked up its first victory of the season Tuesday night, beating Utah Valley 77-70 in a non-conference game at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Wahine used a career-night from sophomore
Allie Patterson and improved to 1-6 on the season. Utah Valley dropped to 2-4 overall.
Patterson, making her first start of her career, responded with 20 points and seven rebounds in 31 minutes of action.
As a team, the Rainbow Wahine shot 51 percent from the field, the second time they have shot over 50 percent in the last three games. UH also shot 41 percent from 3-point range and hit 75 percent of its free throws.
Early in the first half, the Rainbow Wahine applied some tough defense against the Wolverines, holding them to just five points over the first 12 minutes. With the defense, UH was able to open up a 16-5 lead.
UH carried a 31-23 lead into halftime, its first halftime lead of the season. Patterson and Liepkalne led the way for the Rainbow Wahine with 11 points each. The 11 points for Patterson were a career-high in a UH uniform.

Allie Patterson started in the frontcourt for the first time, replacing
Sarah Ilic, who missed the game with an injury.
UH travels off the islands for the first time this season to participate in the Arizona State Tournament, beginning Saturday, Dec. 6. The Rainbow Wahine will face Northern Arizona on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (2:30 p.m. HT) and will face either UC Irvine or Arizona State on Sunday, Dec. 7.
