HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team faced its first ranked opponent of the season and fought hard, but lost 90-74 to No. 19 Purdue Saturday afternoon in Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic.
On the second day of the classic, the Rainbow Wahine played their best game of the season, shooting 54 percent from the field and 42 percent from 3-point range. But Purdue shot 54 percent from the field and 61 percent from 3-point range, knocking down 13 3-pointers.
With the loss the Rainbow Wahine fall to 0-5 on the young season, while Purdue improved to 4-1. Purdue is 1-1 in the classic, while UH is 0-2.
Saturday, the Rainbow Wahine were led by
Keisha Kanekoa, who scored 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Kanekoa also added four assists and two steals.
Megan Tinnin scored 19 points, including five 3-pointers and
Dita Liepkalne added her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
In the first half, the Rainbow Wahine were led by Kanekoa, who had 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Tinnin added 11 points, including three 3-pointers as UH played one of its better halves of the season.
Sunday is the final day of the classic, with Iowa State and San Diego State playing at 11 a.m., followed by Purude and Prairie View at 1:10 p.m. and wrapped up with UH and Stanford at 4 p.m. The Rainbow Wahine game will also be shown live on KFVE (K-5).

In the opening game Saturday, San Diego State received 23 points from Paris Johnson and Jennifer Layton-Bailes added 15 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Prairie View was led by Gaati Werena, who scored 12 points and Candice Thomas had 11 points.
No. 5 Stanford 83, No. 22 Iowa State 45
In Saturday's final game, Rosalyn Gold-Onwude and Sarah Boothe each had 14 points for Stanford and Kayla Pedersen added 13 points in the win. Iowa State was led by Whitney Williams, who scored 10 points in the loss.
