WAILEA, Maui – Freshman
Leo Rosenberg shined in the University of Hawai`i men's tennis team's loss to national and Pac-10 powerhouse Stanford, 6-1, in a mock dual match, Tuesday afternoon at the Grand Wailea Resort.
Rosenberg earned a huge victory at the No. 4 position over Richard Wire, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3). Wire is ranked No. 66 in the ITA singles rankings. The Rainbow Warriors lost the other five singles matches. Sophomore
Dennis Lajola gave a good fight in a three-set loss to Stanford's top player, No. 4 Alex Clayton, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 at the No. 1 court. Lajola is ranked No. 89 in the ITA singles rankings and leads the team with a 6-3 singles record.
UH junior
Andreas Weber, ranked No. 76, dropped a tight 6-3, 7-6(6) decision to Ryan Thacher at the No. 3 position. Weber had a set point before losing the second set and the match.
In doubles play, the Rainbow Warriors lost all three matches. The teams of senior
Sascha Heinemann and Weber and Lajola and Rosenberg lost 8-5 decisions at the No. 1 and 2 positions.
The dual match results will not count toward either team's record, however, individual results will count. The match concluded the fall season for the Rainbow Warriors. UH will open the spring season at home against SEC powerhouse Kentucky, on January 10, 3:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
