HILO, Hawai`i – The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team put together a late rally Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as Toledo held UH off, falling 67-61 in the second game of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo, Hawai`i.
To open the season and during the invitational, the Rainbow Wahine are now 0-2. Toledo remains the only unbeaten team at 2-0, while Loyola Marymount and Arizona have 1-1 records. The invitational is being hosted by UH-Hilo at the Civic Auditorium.
The Rainbow Wahine were down by 12 with just over three minutes remaining, but hit a couple of 3-pointers and made a late push against the Rockets, but time ran out on them in the end.
Overall UH was led by
Keisha Kanekoa, who was playing in front of family and friends on her home island. Kanekoa scored 17 points and added three assists and two steals for the Rainbow Wahine.
Junior
Megan Tinnin finished with 15 points, including four 3-pointers and
Dita Liepkalne recorded her second career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
In the opening half, the Rainbow Wahine rallied for six straight points over the final minute to cut the deficit to 36-30.
Tinnin led the offense in the first half, scoring 13 points, including four 3-pointers. Liepkalne added seven points, five rebounds and two assists and
Sarah Ilic and
Rebecca Dew each scored four points.
UH fell behind early in the first half, but battled back to tie the game 17-17, midway through. The Rainbow Wahine hung around, until making a late push to close the half. UH shot 35.3 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from 3-point range in the first half.
In the first game of the day Saturday afternoon, Arizona held off Loyola Marymount 93-88, in three overtimes. Both teams are 1-1 in the three-game invitational.
The Bank of Hawaii Invitational wraps up on Sunday with the final two games, featuring Loyola Marymount and Toledo at 12 p.m., followed by UH and Arizona at 2 p.m.
