HILO, Hawai`i – The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team opened the season Friday night with a 63-47 loss against Loyola Marymount in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational held at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo, Hawai`i.
The Rainbow Wahine are playing in Hilo for the first time since 1993 and are hosting a tournament for the first time in history. UH opens the season 0-1, while Loyola Marymount begins 1-0.
Friday night, the Rainbow Wahine were led by two local products,
Leilani Galdones and
Keisha Kanekoa. Galdones, from Hilo, scored nine points and added four rebounds. Kanekoa, from Honoka`a, scored four points, but dished out five assists and had two steals.
In the first half, the Rainbow Wahine trailed 32-23 going into the break. Galdones led the team with seven points and
Ebony Jones and
Rebecca Dew each added four points.
The Bank of Hawaii Invitational includes Loyola Marymount, Arizona and Toledo and is hosted by the University of Hawai`i-Hilo at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
In the first game of the invitational, Toledo beat Arizona 64-63, receiving two clutch free throws from Naama Shafir with four seconds remaining to pull out the victory.
The second day of the invitational will feature Arizona and Loyola Marymount facing each other in the first game at 12 p.m., followed by UH and Toledo at 2 p.m.
