TULSA, Okla. - University of Hawai`i sophomore Dennis Lajola advanced to the third round of the qualifying draw at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships, Tuesday, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Lajola, ranked No. 89 in the preseason ITA singles rankings, earned a straight sets victory against No. 32 Nikolas Cromydas of Vanderbilt, 6-2, 6-2. Lajola will next face Wil Spencer of Texas A&M in the third and final round of the qualifying draw. The winner will qualify for the main draw. Main draw singles play begins on Thursday, August 9.
In other singles action, UH senior and sixth-seeded Sascha Heinemann was upset by Michae Shabaz of Virginia, 6-2, 6-3. Junior and 27th-seeded Andreas Weber dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Halle Norberg of Mississippi. Heinemann is ranked No. 53 and Weber is No. 76 in the ITA preseason rankings.
Last year, Heinemann won three matches to qualfiy into the main draw of the All-American Championships and Weber earned an automatic spot into the main draw.
