Women’s Basketball Begins Season With Exhibition Win

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team began the 2008-09 season with a 66-60 win over BYU-Hawaii in an exhibition game Monday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
 
The Rainbow Wahine got a chance to play against someone other than themselves since practice began Oct. 17. The Seasiders were also making their first appearance against another team this season.
 
UH was also able to break in several new players, playing in the Stan Sheriff Center for the first time in their careers.
 
Overall the Rainbow Wahine were led by Megan Tinnin, who had 14 points and Dita Liepkalne added 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
 
Newcomer Sarah Ilic, a junior college transfer, recorded 10 rebounds and eight points in her first game in a UH uniform. Allie Patterson had six points off the bench in her first game and Rebecca Dew added four points in her first game.
 
Senior Catherine Cho had eight points and three rebounds, and Ebony Jones and Keisha Kanekoa each added six points.
 
The Rainbow Wahine open the season Nov. 14 in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational, being played at the University of Hawaii-Hilo. The three-day tournament features Loyola Marymount, Toledo and Arizona.
