HONOLULU - Sixth ranked Long Beach State swept No. 12 Hawai`i tonight 32-30, 30-20, 30-22 in the opening Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match of the season for both clubs in front of 2,507 fans at the Stan Sheriff Center.
In set one, the lead teetered early with UH taking its biggest lead at 9-7. But the 49ers would reel off the next five points and increase its lead to 19-14. The Warriors mounted a late rally to tie it at 29. The two teams split the next two points before The Beach ended it on a kill and an ace to take the set, 32-30.
Hawai`i (1-3, 0-1 MPSF) won the opening pointin the second set on a LBSU service error. However, the Beach roared back with four-straight points and never looked back going up two games to none with a 30-20 win as UH mustered only a .054 hitting percentage.
Long Beach State (3-0, 1-0 MPSF) broke open a three-all tie in the third set with four consecutive points. The 49ers would go up by eight at the midway point, 15-7, while hitting a blistering 80% (8-0-10). UH clawed its way back to within two, 24-22, but LBSU found a way to win the next six points in a row to close out the match, 30-22.
UH hit only .150 on the night compared to LBSU's .413. The 49ers out blocked the Warriors 13.5 to 5.5.
Leading the way for UH was Nejc Zemljak who had a team-high nine kills. Lotman was the leading attacker for the 49ers with a match-high 21 kills.
The two teams meet again Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the SSC.
