WAIPAHU, Oahu - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team battled Pacific to a 2-2 double-overtime draw in the opening evening of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic Friday night before 1,620 fans at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer. UH moved to 2-0-1 on the season.
UH found itself down a goal twice during the match and both times came back. Junior Taryn Fukuroku scored her first goal of the season, while sophomore Ambree Ako scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year to lead the Rainbow Wahine.
The Tigers got on the board first in the 20th minute when Bunny Dickson volleyed in a goal after a cross from Mandi Van Dorn. Down 1-0 at the break, UH equalized less than eight minutes into the second half off a set play. Jessica Domingo took a free kick just outside the box, slipping a ball past the Tiger wall and to the foot of a streaking Fukuroku.
Pacific (2-0-1) went on top again in the 77th minute on a counter attack. Dickson cleared the ball to Mandi Van Dorn who raced from just past midfield for a one-on-one finish against UH goalkeeper Kori Lu. But UH responded right on the ensuing kickoff. After Pacific failed to clear the ball, Kelli-Anne Chang headed the ball to Ako in the box for the equalizer just 10 seconds after Pacific took the lead.
Hawai`i finished the match with 16-12 shot advantage. Half of UH's 16 shots were on goal, including a Nicole Mikula left-footer that was punched away by Pacific goalie Jaime Souze three minutes into the first overtime period.
The meeting was the third straight that UH and UOP played to a double-overtime draw.
The tournament continues Saturday with Pacific taking on Tennessee-Martin. UH will face Tennessee-Martin on Sunday at 5 p.m. to conclude the Soccer Classic.
