WAIPAHU, O`ahu - Less than a week after one of the worst losses in program history, the University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team bounced back with a 1-0 shutout of Weber State Friday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Kelli-Anne Chang scored the winning goal in the 37th minute to snap UH's two-game losing streak.
With the win, the Rainbow Wahine improved to 6-2-1 overall and remained undefeated in seven home matches this season. UH also got back on the winning track after dropping two road matches last weekend, including a 6-0 drubbing at the hands of nationally ranked UCLA.
UH was bolstered by the return of two players who sat out the loss against the Bruins. Sophomore forward Ambree Ako and senior defender Jessica Domingo returned to the starting lineup, with Domingo providing the assist on Chang's game-winning goal. It was Domingo's team-leading sixth assist of the year.
UH launched 21 shots against the Wildcats (3-5-1), but had to hold on for the win. The Rainbow Wahine held a 10-2 shot advantage and took a 1-0 lead at the half on the strength of Chang's first goal of the season. The junior midfielder took a feed from Domingo in open space, made her way up the teeth of the Wildcat defense and ripped a shot from inside the box for the only goal of the match.
Weber State was able to garner a few prime opportunities in the second half, including a shot off the crossbar, but ultimately could not find the back of the net. Kori Lu picked up her second solo shutout of the season and in the process tied former Rainbow Wahine goalkeeper Demarre Sanchez' UH career record for solo shutouts (10).
UH is back in action on Sunday when it faces Hawaii Pacific. Kickoff is 5:00 p.m. at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
