No. 13 Rainbow Wahine End Road Trip With Sweep Of San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The No. 13 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (11-3, 5-0 WAC) swept the San Jose State Spartans (6-7, 0-2) 30-17, 30-25 and 30-21 in front of a crowd of 823 at Spartan Gym Monday.

Jamie Houston had an amazing match, hitting .605 with 24 kills, six digs and three blocks. Aneli Otineru had 16 kills with a .351 hitting percentage while Juliana Sanders had seven kills and four blocks. Elizabeth Ka`aihue led all players with 16 digs while Stephanie Brandt had 42 assists.

Sanders put away her first kill as Hawai`i jumped ahead 7-3 to start game one. SJSU got the margin down to two at 10-8 before a five-point run on the serve of Amber Kaufman pushed UH's advantage to 15-8. The Rainbow Wahine later added a 6-1 run to get it to 21-11 before eventually taking it 30-17. On the game, Houston hit .562 with nine kills while Cubi-Otineru hit .545 with six kills.

San Jose State took their first lead of the match at 7-6 early in game two. UH responded with a 5-1 run to go ahead 11-8, After giving up two points to allow their edge to slip to a point, Hawai`i used a 4-1 spurt to hold a 15-11 lead at the media timeout. The Rainbow Wahine would extend their advantage to 23-15 before a big 5-1 SJSU run cut it back to 24-20. The Spartans were able to cut it back to a two-point deficit at 27-25, but a kill by Kaufman and two by Houston ended it, 30-27.

SJSU opened game three with a 3-1 lead, only to see a 5-1 UH run put the Rainbow Wahine ahead 6-4. After allowing the Spartans to tie it at 7-7, Hawai`i rattled off six of the next seven points to take a 13-8 advantage. SJSU pulled within two points at 17-15 before a five-point run by UH got it back up to 22-15. The Rainbow Wahine would keep a comfortable lead the rest of the way, taking game three 30-21.

Hawai`i will now return home to host Nevada and Fresno State on Oct. 5 and 7, respectively.
