LOS ANGELES - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team dropped its second straight road match of the season with a 6-0 loss to No. 7 UCLA Sunday afternoon at Drake Stadium. Hawaii fell to 5-2-1 with the loss.
All-American Lauren Cheney scored four goals, the most prolific performance ever by a UH opponent. Cheney tallied two goals in the first 12 minutes of the match, then tacked on two more in the first 11 minutes of the second half.
UH faced its highest ranked team in five years with three starters--senior midfielder Jessica Domingo, junior defender Tehane Higa and sophomore forward Ambree Ako--sidelined. UH paid dearly, giving up its most goals since a 7-0 loss at BYU in 1998.
Meanwhile, the Rainbow Wahine were shutout for the first time in eight matches this season as they mustered just two shots all match on the Bruins. UH remained winless in five all-time meetings with UH.
The road woes also continued for the Rainbow Wahine, who have now dropped eight of their last nine away matches, including the last six straight, dating back to last season.
The Rainbow Wahine look to get back on the winning track when they return to Hawai`i for a pair of home contest, starting with a meeting versus Weber State on Friday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is 7:00 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
