Cal State Northridge Defeats UH In Double Overtime, 2-1

Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge handed the University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team its first loss of the season with a 2-1 double-overtime decision Friday at Matador Soccer Field. Carrie Faith Murphy scored the golden goal in the 103rd minute to give the Matadors the come-from-behind win.

UH took a 1-0 lead into halftime but the Matadors (2-4-1) stormed back with two goals, including the equalizer with 1:12 left in regulation. The match marked UH's first loss of the year and the first time the team scored less than two goals in a match. It was also UH's fifth straight road loss, dating back to last season.

Nicole Mikula got UH on the board first with her first career goal just before halftime. The freshman defender served a corner kick that bended in far post past the reach of Matador goalkeeper Kellie Dreamer in the 44th minute.

UH out-shot CSN, 8-5, in the first half. But the Matadors were on attack during the entire second half with numerous opportunities in the box. UH withstood nearly everything CSN threw at them until the waning two minutes of the match. The Matadors finally broke through on its 13th shot of the second half when Susie Mischenko got behind the UH defense and lobbed a shot over Kori Lu with just 72 seconds left in regulation.

CSN sealed the win less than three minutes into the second overtime. UH attempted to clear the ball but it deflected off a Matador and into the possession of a streaking Murphy who low-lined the game-winner. The Matadors were relentless after halftime, out-shooting the Rainbow Wahine, 18-5, in the second half and overtime. For the match, they out-shot UH, 23-13.

Lu tied her career high with 10 saves and stuffed a flurry of Matador opportunities throughout the match.

UH concludes its two-match California road swing with a meeting versus No. 7 UCLA on Sunday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m. at Drake Stadium.
