WAIPAHU, O`ahu - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team got its most prolific performance in four years, defeating Duquesne, 5-2, in a non-conference match Friday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine got an early score than rolled past the Dukes with four second-half goals.
UH last scored five goals in a shutout win over San Jose State in 2003. The Rainbow Wahine remained undefeated with the win at 4-0-1.
Taryn Fukuroku led UH with two goals and one assist. It was the third career multi-goal match for the forward from Wailuku, Maui. Meanwhile, Jessica Domingo tied a school-record with three assists. Four others hold the record, which was last accomplished by Adria Campbell in 2005.
UH got on the board just 2:59 into the match when Tehane Higa scored her third goal of the young season. The goal came off a set play when UH earned a free kick from the left flank. Domingo served a low liner into the box to a streaking Ambree Ako. Ako flicked the ball to a wide-open Higa who snuck behind the Duquesne defense and hammered home a point-blank shot.
Fukuroku put home UH's second goal just 49 seconds after halftime, again off a UH free kick. Domingo lofted the ball over the Duke defense to Mari Punzal, who then fed Fukuroku for her first score of the night.
Duquesne cut into the UH lead, 2-1, in the 61st minute on a goal by Kimberly Roncase, but the Rainbow Wahine responded four minutes later with goals by Punzal and Fukuroku just 76 seconds apart to take a commanding 4-1 lead. The Rainbow Wahine got its final score when Emma Makepa-Foley scored her first career goal off a rebound in the 85th minute.
UH out-shot Duquesne, 22-8, with 14 of the shots on goal. The Dukes fell to 3-2 with the loss.
The Rainbow Wahine and Dukes will face off again on Sunday, Sept. 16. Kickoff is 4:00 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
