HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (33-23, 11-13 WAC) ended their 2007 regular season with a 1-0 win over Fresno State (32-27, 17-7) on senior night, in front of a crowd of 2,640, at the Les Murakami Stadium Monday.
Tyler Davis (6-2) pitched 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk to get the win. Brandon Miller (1-3) took the loss for Fresno State.
The win completed UH's first series victory over the Bulldogs since 2003 and gave Hawai`i their first 1-0 victory since April 29, 2004, when the Rainbows beat Nevada in 10 innings.
Justin Frash went 3-for-4 with a triple and one RBI to lead the 'Bows while Jonathan Hee went 2-for-4 with a run and a double. Nicholas Rhodes had a great outing in just his second start of the season, allowing five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
The Bulldogs threatened in the second as Tommy Mendonca hit a ball to center field, chasing Brandon Haislet to the wall. But Mendonca tried to turn it into a triple and was thrown out at third on the relay by Nathan Young. Fresno State looked more primed to score in the fourth, stringing together a single and a UH error to put runners at second and third with no outs. But Rhodes was able to get out of it unscathed, getting a line out, a strikeout and a ground out, keeping the game scoreless.
It took until the eighth inning for someone to put up a run. With two outs, Hee singled through the left side, then moved to second on a walk by Landon Hernandez. Frash then hit a shot towards first base that richoceted off Bulldog firstbaseman Alan Ahmady's glove. Secondbaseman Erik Wetzel was able to get to the ball and make a great throw home, but Hee slid around the tag, scoring the game's only run.
Hawai`i now heads to the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, where they will face host Nevada at 7 p.m. (4 p.m. HST) on Thursday, May 24, in Reno, Nev.
