HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team snapped Azusa Pacific's 20-match win streak after a 4-3 victory, Monday at the UH Tennis Complex. After dropping five consecutive matches, the Rainbow Warriors (6-10) have now won two straight, while the Cougars (21-2), ranked second in the NAIA, dropped only its second match of the season.
UH took the doubles point by winning two of three matches with Andreas Weber and Sascha Heinemann outlasting Patrick Kur and Mathias Weber, 9-7, in the clinching match at the No. 1 court.
In singles play, Heinemann got things going for the Rainbow Warriors with a 6-3, 6-1 win over David Goodman at the top singles spot. The Cougars answered as Ronald Chow swept Brent Hunter, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 With UH holding on to a 2-1 advantage, the 'Bows sealed the team victory as Weber upended Kur, 6-3, 6-1, at court two and Chad Faulk put the finishing touches on a 6-2, 6-2 straight set win over Weber at No. 3.
With no factor to the outcome, APU's Art Fatkhiev held on to a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Jeff Fitch at No. 6 and Matthijs Bolsius fended off two match points in a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (9) super tie-breaker win over Spence Mendoza at court four.
Hawai`i will play its final home match of the year when the Rainbow Warriors take on BYU-Hawai`i on Wednesday, April 18. First serve is 4:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
