Box Score

HONOLULU - Joshua Schneider faced just one batter over the minimum, benefitting from five Rainbow double plays, in a complete-game as the University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (22-11, 3-3 WAC) shut out San Jose State (18-12, 3-3) 6-0 in front of a crowd of 2,556 at the Les Murakami Stadium Sunday. Schneider (3-1) pitched his first career complete game and shutout, allowing five hits with one walk to get the win. Steven Vidal (1-2) took the loss for SJSU.

Landon Hernandez led the offensive effort, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run. Kris Sanchez added a 2-for-3 game with two doubles and a run while Brandon Haislet went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Freshmen Kevin Macdonald and Vinnie Catricala also added 2-for-4 games.

Hawai`i got on the board in the second as Hernandez singled up the middle, scoring Macdonald to give UH the 1-0 edge. The Rainbow defense then rose to the occasion, recording double plays in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, keeping the Spartans off the board.

The 'Bows then got extended their advantage in the bottom of the sixth. Catricala drove in Sanchez to start it up, before Hernandez came up with the big blast, a two-run home run to left, making it 4-0.

Haislet then drove in two in the bottom of the seventh to get the Hawai`i lead to 6-0. In the mean time, Schneider retired 10-straight batters between the sixth and ninth innings before allowing a one-out single in the ninth. But the UH defense had one last big play in them, turning a 4-6-3 double play, coming up just one short of the school record of six in a game, to close out the 6-0 shutout victory.

The Rainbows will next go on the road for two weeks, starting with a three-game series at Sacramento State on April 5, 6 and 7.
