HONOLULU - In a game that took almost 24 hours to finish, the University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (14-7) fell to the No. 24 Arizona Wildcats (14-5) in front of a crowd of 2,483.
Ian Harrington (3-4) took the loss, allowing two runs in 7.1 innings with seven strikeouts. Preston Guilmet (4-0) got the win, giving up no runs on five hits with 12 strikeouts in 8.0 innings. Daniel Schlereth allowed a run in 1.0 inning, earning his fifth save.
The game was called at 9:45 p.m. on Friday, March 9, in the bottom of the ninth inning with Kris Sanchez, the leadoff batter in the inning, facing a 3-2 count. The game was then resumed on March 10, at 5:30 p.m.
Sanchez led off the conclusion with a single to left center on the first pitch of the day. After Elijah Christensen walked, Nathan Young hit a bunt single to load the bases. Schlereth retired the next two batters before Derek DuPree singled in Sanchez, cutting the deficit to a run. Jonathan Hee then hit a ball up the middle, but UA shortstop Robert Abel dove to tag second base before DuPree got in, ending the game at 2-1.
The Rainbows were led by Christensen, who went 2-for-2. DuPree added a 2-for-5 game with one RBI. Sanchez also added a 1-for-4 game with one run.
Hawai`i had a couple of early chances to get on the board. The first came in the second inning as Guilmet walked three-straight batters to load the bases. But Guilmet was able to strike out the following batter to end the threat. UH again threatened in the third as Brandon Haislet hit a double to give the 'Bows runners at second and third. But Guilmet again stepped up, striking out the next batter to keep it scoreless.
The Wildcats then made their move in the fifth. With runners on first and third and two outs, Arizona ran a double-steal, sending Colt Sedbrook from first to second and Robert Abel from third to home. After UH catcher Landon Hernandez threw to second baseman Jonathan Hee in an attempt to tag out Sedbrook. Sedbrook then broke back towards first and by the time Hee was able to tag him, Abel had already come in to score from third, giving UA the 1-0 edge. Arizona later added a run in the eighth as C.J. Ziegler drove in Sedbrook, making it 2-0.
This is the first time that UH has had a game suspended due to rain since March 14, 2002, when the Rainbows game at UH-Hilo was suspended in the bottom of the 12th inning. The game was resumed the following day with the 'Bows falling to the Vulcans 10-9 in 12 innings.
After the conclusion of the game, the two teams are set to play their normally scheduled Saturday game at 6:35 p.m.
