Rainbows Fall 2-1 To San Jose State In WAC Play

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (21-11, 2-3 WAC) fell to the San Jose State Spartans (18-11, 3-2) 2-1 in front of a crowd of 3,177 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday. Mark Rodrigues (6-2) allowed two runs in 5.2 innings, but took the loss. Brandon Hennessey (2-0) got the win for SJSU while Loren Moneypenny picked up the save.

Brandon Haislet went 1-for-4 with one RBI. Justin Frash added a 1-for-3 game with a run and a double. Matthew Daly pitched 3.1 perfect innings, retiring all 10 batters he faced.

Hawai`i took the early lead in the first at Haislet drove in Frash. The Spartans threatened to score in the second, loading the bases with just one out. But the 'Bows turned a double play around the horn (5-4-3) to keep their slight 1-0 edge.

San Jose State made their move in the sixth, scoring on a RBI-single by Brian Chase to tie the score at 1-1. The Spartans then took the lead on a delayed double steal, making it 2-1 in favor of SJSU.

The Rainbows could only muster single hits in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, losing by the final score of 2-1. The two teams will close out their series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium.
