Women's Basketball Drops Final Game of Classic to Oregon State

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team dropped the final game of the Island Imaging Paradise Classic, 70-57 to Oregon State on Monday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine led by one point at halftime in a close battle, which saw 11 lead changes and seven ties. In the end the Beavers pulled away, giving UH a tough home loss.

With the loss, UH falls to 4-5 on the season and finish the classic with a 1-2 record. Western Carolina beat Tennessee Tech in its final game Monday to win the classic title, going 3-0. Oregon State finished 2-1 and Tennessee Tech finished 0-3.

Offensively Monday night, the Rainbow Wahine were led by Iwona Zagrobelna, who finished with a season-high 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench. The 16 points were one less than her career high.

Saundra Cariaga scored 12 points and added four rebounds on Monday night and finished the classic averaging 10.6 points. Megan Tinnin added 10 points off the bench for UH.

Senior Tanya Smith scored six points and added seven rebounds. Smith was the lone Rainbow Wahine to earn All-Tournament honors. She averaged 10.6 points and 10.0 rebounds per game during the classic.

In the first half, both teams battled back-and-forth, exchanging leads 10 times and the score was tied six times.

The Rainbow Wahine was led by Iwona Zagrobelna, who scored 10 points in 10 minutes off the bench, including five rebounds. Dita Liepkalne and Saundra Cariaga each added four points in the half.

As a team UH shot 45.8 percent in the first half, and dished out 11 assists as a team. Oregon State shot 35.7 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from 3-point range.

Island Imaging Paradise Classic - Game 5
Western Carolina 74, Tennessee Tech 61

The Western Carolina Lady Catamounts went undefeated in the classic, defeating Tennessee Tech 74-61 on the final day Monday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Lady Catamounts were led by Lauren Powell, who had 14 points and four rebounds. Chevon Keith added 12 points and six assists and Monique Dawson had 11 points.

The Golden Eagles were led by Kristina Tyler, who had a game-high 20 points and added seven rebounds.

Western Carolina went 3-0 in the classic, while Tennessee Tech finished 0-3.
