Women's Basketball Bounces Back With Victory Over Tennessee Tech

HONOLULU - The University of Hawaii jumped out to an early lead Saturday afternoon against Tennessee Tech and never trailed, earning its first victory in the Island Imaging Paradise Classic 60-57 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine received a career game from Dita Liepkalne, which helped them improve to 4-4 on the season.

Liepkalne recorded her first career double-double, which included both career highs in points and rebounds. She had 19 points and 12 rebounds in 37 minutes of action.

"We all knew we had to come out and pick up a victory today," Liepkalne said. "In the first half we had a lot of energy and that helped us get out to a big lead."

Liepkalne was the only Rainbow Wahine in double figures, but seven other players scored in a balanced attack. Tanya Smith had eight points and eight rebounds and Saundra Cariaga had nine points and four rebounds. Megan Tinnin came off the bench to score seven points.

UH will return to action Monday, December 17 on the final day of the classic. Due to graduation ceremonies, the classic will take Sunday off. The Rainbow Wahine will face Oregon State at 7 p.m.

As a team, the Rainbow Wahine held Tennessee Tech to 33.9 percent from the field and forced 16 turnovers. Offensively they shot 45.3 percent and went 6 of 9 from long range.

In the opening half, the Rainbow Wahine never trailed, leading by as many as 12 points, before going into halftime with a 32-22 lead.

Offensively UH was led by Liepkalne, who had 13 points and nine rebounds in 17 minutes. Cariaga had seven points and three rebounds and Tinnin had five points and two rebounds in 10 minutes off the bench.

As a team the Rainbow Wahine shot 42.9 percent from the field and went 3 for 4 from 3-point range. The UH defense shut down Tennessee Tech's offense, holding them to 22 points on 30 percent shooting from the field and 18.2 percent shooting from 3-point range.

Paradise Classic Game 3
Western Carolina 82, Oregon State 70

The Lady Catamounts remain the only team undefeated in the Island Imaging Paradise Classic with an 82-70 victory over Oregon State in the first game Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Western Carolina was led by Kendra Eaton, who had 15 points, and improved to 7-2 on the season. Monique Dawson, Lauren Powell and Brooke Johnson each had 13 points for the Lady Catamounts.

Oregon State was led by Ashley Allen, who scored 34 points, but dropped to 5-4 on the year. Brittney Davis added 13 points for the Beavers.

Western Carolina will face Tennessee Tech on Monday, December 17 at 5 p.m., while Oregon State will face Hawaii at 7 p.m. on Monday night on the final day of the classic.
