WAIPAHU, O`ahu - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team captured the 2007 Western Athletic Conference regular-season title with a 7-0 rout of Idaho Sunday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. It is the third WAC championship for the Rainbow Wahine (13-4-2, 6-1 WAC), who also took home the conference title in 2003 and '05.
UH scored four goals in the first half, then added three more in the second before the match was called by the center referee with 15 minutes left in regulation due to inclement weather. The match was played in light drizzles during the first half, before a heavy downpour started with 30 minutes left. The match was called at 74:55 and was deemed official after exceeding the 70-minute standard.
It was a record setting night for Hawai`i. The seven goals was the most by a UH team in conference play despite the truncated time. Meanwhile, the Rainbow Wahine set a new single-season record for goals in a season with 57, breaking the old mark of 51 in 2003.
UH also tied the 2003 squad's record for single season wins at 13 and concluded its first-ever undefeated season at home (11-0-1), including a school-record nine straight home wins to end the season.
Kelli-Anne Chang led UH with three goals. The junior midfielder became just the fourth player in school history to record a hat trick, joining Veronica Flores, Natasha Kai and teammate Vanessa Bailey, who accomplished the feat earlier this year versus Hawaii Pacific.
Taryn Fukuroku gave UH a 2-0 over the Vandals (5-12-1, 1-5-1 WAC) by scoring a pair goals 51 seconds apart less than 15 minutes into the match. The junior forward also added an assist on the night. Ambree Ako also tallied two goals, while adding two assists. The sophomore forward extended her streak of consecutive matches with a point to eight, including a goal or assist in all seven WAC matches this year.
The match was the final home appearance for five seniors-- Jessica Domingo, Shawn Higa, Koren Takeyama, Aimee Watanabe and Lehua Wood. The senior class helped UH claim two WAC titles in the last three years.
The Rainbow Wahine now head to the WAC Tournament in Boise, Idaho. As the tournament's top seed, UH receives a bye and will play on Friday, Nov. 9 in the first of two semifinal matches.
