Minnesota Hands Hawai`i Second Straight Loss

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine Classic suffered its worst outing of the season with a 72-54 loss to Minnesota in the third-place game of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic Sunday afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 3-3 on the year.

The Gophers (7-1) capitalized on season-high 35 UH turnovers and used a 24-2 run in a nine minutes span between the first and second halves to hand the Rainbow Wahine its second straight double-digit loss.

Emily Fox led four Gophers in double-digits with 17 points. Megan Tinnin was the only Rainbow Wahine in double-digits with 15 points, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc.

UH and Minnesota both shot 39 percent from the floor, but Hawai'i's inability to execute proved too much to overcome. Hawai`i committed an astounding 21 turnovers in the first 20 minutes as Minnesota scored 23 of its 40 first-half points off of UH turnovers.

It was a game of runs in the first half. Minnesota out-scored UH, 17-2, early on to take a 23-9 lead. But UH came back with 14 unanswered points to tie the game. A Leilani Galdones three-pointer put UH ahead, 26-25, with 5:24 remaining in the first half. The Gophers, however, scored 15 of the final 17 points of the half to take a 40-28 lead at the break.

Minnesota then scored nine straight out of the locker room to extend its lead to 21-points. Iwona Zagrobelna finally stopped the bleeding with a bucket at the 16:23 mark, but it wouldn't get any better for the Rainbow Wahine who fell behind by as many as 27 points late in the game.

Hartford, which defeated UH in Saturday's semifinal, went on to beat Virginia, 70-53, for the tournament title. The Rainbow Wahine will have an 18-day layoff before hosting the Island Imaging Paradise Classic, Dec. 14-17. UH will face Western Carolina on the first day of the tournament at 7:00 p.m.
