UC Davis Pulls Away, Downs Rainbow Wahine, 73-52

Box Score

HONOLULU - The Rainbow Wahine dropped their first game of the season to a determined UC Davis squad, 73-52. Hawai`i took a 33-32 lead into halftime, but the Aggies stormed out of the break, scoring 14 unanswered points, never to look back again. Senior Tanya Smith recorded her second double-double in as many games, scoring 12 points and grabbing 17 rebounds to lead the `Bows Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The loss evens Hawai`i's record to 1-1 on the year, while UCD remains undefeated at 3-0.

UC Davis took advantage of 10 UH turnovers and went on a pair of 14-point runs to pull away in the second half. During the first run, UC Davis' Jessica Campbell accounted for nine of the points with two treys and a conventional three-point play to push their lead to 46-33.

Hawai`i battled back. Smith snapped the scoring drought with a 10-ft. short jumper with 14:39 remaining. Both teams exchanged baskets. Then, down 51-38, UH mounted a charge of their own, scoring 10-straight points. Keisha Kanekoa started it off with a three pointer from the right corner. Smith sank a couple of free throws and Megan Tinnin added a three-point shot and a layup, to cut the deficit to three points, 51-48 with 8:51 to play.

But that was as close as UH got in the waning minutes of the game. The Aggies were too strong in the end, scoring 14 unanswered points to end the game, while holding UH scoreless for the final four minutes of the game.

For Smith it marked the 16th time in her career that she's recorded a double-double. Her 17 rebounds in the game is the second highest total for her in her career.

Tinnin had a team-high 13 points, followed by Smiths's 12. Saundra Cariaga was the only other Rainbow Wahine in double figures with 10 points.

Hawai`i will conclude the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic tomorrow, when they take on the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona in the tournament's final game at 5:00 pm.
