Hawai`i Plays Pepperdine To 1-1 Draw

Box Score

MALIBU, Calif. - Ambree Ako scored the match-tying goal late in regulation to help the University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team gain a 1-1 double-overtime tie Sunday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. With the tie the Rainbow Wahine snapped a seven-match road losing streak dating back to last year and moved to 7-3-2 overall.

UH overcame a sluggish start to salvage a tie versus the Waves (2-4-5) and avoid a 0-4 road record. The Rainbow Wahine didn't launch a single shot in the first half, while Pepperdine got off seven. The Waves got on the board first on a goal with just 51 seconds left before halftime. Defender Kelsey Baker cleared a ball over the top of the UH defense, Amanda Rupp gathered it, and put away a breakaway goal to put Pepperdine up at the break.

The UH offense came alive midway through the second half with a pair of near goals. Taryn Fukuroku's volley was punched over the frame by Wave goalkeeper Kayla Stolte, while Chelsea Deptula nearly put home a header on the ensuing corner kick.

UH broke through with 10:49 left in the match when Nicole Mikula sent a cross from the left flank to Ako, who one-timed the equalizer. It was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for the sophomore forward.

The Rainbow Wahine had a pair of prime opportunities in the first overtime period, but Ako and Fukuroku failed to convert in front of the goal. The Waves ended the match with a 14-6 shot advantage, with UH goalkeeper Kori Lu finishing with eight saves for the match.

Hawai`i next opens Western Athletic Conference action at home when it hosts Nevada on Friday, Oct. 12. Kickoff is 7:00 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
