Late Goal Lifts UH Over San Jose State

Box Score

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Taryn Fukuroku scored a goal with less than five minutes left in regulation to lift the University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team to a 1-0 win over San Jose State Sunday afternoon at Spartan Field. UH (10-3-2) improved to a perfect 3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference, while nabbing its first road win of the season.

The win was UH's first in five road matches this year and also snapped an eight-match road winless streak dating back to last season. Meanwhile, the Rainbow Wahine are off to just its second 3-0 conference start in school history.

Fukuroku's winning goal came at the 85:39 mark. Jessica Domingo started the attack by finding Ambree Ako in the middle of the field. Ako then put a through ball to Fukuroku who beat the goalkeeper far post for her team-leading eighth goal of the year.

It was the only goal as the teams played in windy conditions. With the winds to their back in the first half, the Spartans were able to produce eight corner kicks, but were unable to capitalize on any one of them. San Jose State's best chance came five minutes into the second half, but UH goalkeeper Kori Lu stuffed Jennifer Guadagnolo's point-blank shot deep in the box.

UH generated more opportunities in the second half with the wind advantage, ending the game with a 17-15 shot advantage. Fukuroku fired seven shots for the match, including four on goal. Lu and Nicole McClure combined for the shutout, UH's seventh of the year and its first on the road. It was UH's sixth win the last seven meetings versus San Jose State.

Hawai`i continues its three-match road trip when they travel to Logan, Utah for a meeting with Utah State on Friday, Oct. 26. Kickoff is 3:00 p.m. MDT.
