TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Hawai`i soccer team played its first overtime match of the season, finishing with a 0-0 tie versus Pacific in the Four Points Sheraton Cats Classic Friday night at Murphey Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine moved to 3-1-1 following their first away match this year.
The match pointed to be a defensive battle and that's what happened. The teams entered the match giving up just one goal in eight combined matches--UH with three straight shutouts, while the Tigers had yet to give up a goal all season. Neither team allowed a goal again in this match, with UH running its shutout streak to four matches. Pacific remained undefeated (4-0-1) and tied a school-record with five consecutive shutouts.
It was the second-straight meeting that UH and Pacific played to a double-overtime draw. The teams last met in Honolulu in 2004 when the match finished 1-1. Meanwhile, UH has lost just once in its last 19 overtime matches (8-1-10).
Each team mustered just one shot on goal in the first half and just five total at the end of regulation. Pacific, however, proved the aggressor in the second half and overtime periods. The Tigers generated nine corner kicks and numerous forays in the box, while out-shooting UH, 11-3, after the half. The Tigers held a 14-6 advantage in shots at the end.
UH did have a few prime opportunities deep in Pacific territory. Kelli-Anne Chang fired a shot from 10 yards out in the 67th minute and Taryn Fukuroku had a similar opportunity five minutes into the first overtime, but both shots were stuffed by UOP goalkeeper Jamie Souza, who finished with three saves. Kori Lu finished with four saves for the Rainbow Wahine.
UH will play its second match of the Cats Classic when they face host Arizona on Sunday, Sept. 10. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. MST.
