WAIPAHU, Oahu - The University of Hawai`i soccer put on a dominating performance en route to a 3-0 win over Winthrop in the championship match of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic Sunday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. For the second straight match the Rainbow Wahine (3-1-0) posted a 3-0 shutout and saw its entire 23-player roster see action.
Sophomore midfielder Kelli-Anne Chang scored two goals and assisted on another to lead UH to its third straight win. Fellow midfielder Kristen Oshiro punched in the other Rainbow Wahine goal, the first of her career. UH out-shot Winthrop, 20-4 and allowed just one shot on goal for the Eagles.
Hawai`i scored its first goal in the 18th minute when Jessica Domingo sent a pass into the Winthrop box that found the head of Ambree Ako. The ball then bounced back to a Chang, who hammered a left-footed shot from 25 yards into upper right corner for her first career goal.
UH struck again in the 26th minute off a corner kick. After Chang served the ball from the right flank, Tehane Higa headed the ball near the six-yard box to a waiting Oshiro who nailed the close-range shot. Going into halftime with a 2-0 lead, the Rainbow Wahine got its final goal just six minutes after the break when Chang scored her second goal of the evening off assists from Oshiro and Taryn Fukuroku.
The Rainbow Wahine, who have posted three straight shutout wins, now head to the road for the first time this season. UH travels to Arizona for three matches, starting with a meeting versus Pacific in the CATS Classic on Friday, September 8. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. MST.
