Hawai`i and San Francisco Battle To A Scoreless Draw

Box Score

WAIPAHU, O`ahu - In its fifth straight overtime match, a tireless University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team played San Francisco to a 0-0 draw in the championship match of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Shootout Sunday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The teams shared the tournament title with identical 1-0-1 records and one-goal margin of victories over third-place Cornell.

Despite going into extra periods for the fifth time in the last 10 days, Hawai`i (5-2-2) dug deep and put pressure on the Dons (3-4-1) for the full 110 minutes. Both teams had numerous chances in regulation and overtime, but it was the Rainbow Wahine who would come out disappointed. UH out-shot the Dons, 27-7, and saw two shots cleared by USF defenders at the mouth of the goal.

The Rainbow Wahine defense didn't allow a single shot by USF in the first half, while the Dons first and only shot on goal in the match came in the waning minutes of regulation when Chelsea Hunt had her one-one breakaway stuffed by UH goalkeeper Kori Lu. The Dons also had a opportunity to win it in the 98th minute when Katie Hoban found herself free in the box, but her shot skipped wide left.

Meanwhile, UH had a plethora of chances to score, including six shots on goal. Hawai`i's best opportunity came with three minutes left in regulation when Taryn Fukuroku sent a rocket from the right side of the box. USF goalkeeper Katie Hodgson punched the ball off the crossbar, before Kelli-Anne Chang nailed a rebound shot that was cleared in front of the goal by a USF defender. Chang led UH with seven shots on the match. USF survived another UH scoring attempt in overtime when Kelly McCloskey's flying header made its way through traffic in the mouth of the goal, before again being cleared by a USF defender.

Hawai`i continues its four-match homestand with its final preseason tournament, the OHANA Hotels & Resorts Invitational, Sept. 21-25. The Rainbow Wahine will face Detroit on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
