FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -
Taryn Fukuroku scored the game-winning goal with 1:27 left in double-overtime to give Hawai`i a 2-1 win over Northern Arizona Tuesday night at Lumberjack Stadium. Two days after suffering an overtime loss to Arizona in Tucson, the Rainbow Wahine (4-2-1) turned the tables with a comeback victory.
Fukuroku's goal was her second of the season and her first-ever game-winner. The sophomore striker also added an assist on UH's equalizing goal late in regulation. It was the third straight overtime affair for the Rainbow Wahine, who finished their Arizona trip at 1-1-1. Ambree Ako assisted on the game-winner, while Kelli-Anne Chang scored UH's first goal off of assists by Fukuroku and Kristen Oshiro.
The Rainbow Wahine picked up the win in comeback fashion. Northern Arizona (2-4) struck first with a late goal in the 78th minute when Sarah Vallen ran down the right flank, cut back into the UH box and fired a low left-footer into the right corner of the goal.
A resilient Rainbow Wahine squad battled back just four minutes later. Fukuroku started the play when she pushed the ball to Oshiro on the right wing. Oshiro then sent a cross to the middle of the box where an uncontested Chang settled the ball and rifled a 10-yard shot into the right side of the goal for her team-leading third goal of the season.
The final play of the match started with Ako attacking the gut of the Lumberjack defense. The freshman slipped the ball to the right side of the box as a streaking Fukuroku took a few dribbles before hitting a shot that bounced off the inside of the far post and into the goal.
The Rainbow Wahine now return home for the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Shootout, Sept. 15-17. UH will face Cornell to open the tournament on Friday, Sept. 15. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
