TUCSON, Ariz. - Despite a valiant effort, the University of Hawai`i soccer team suffered a 1-0 overtime loss to Arizona in the Four Points Sheraton Cats Classic Sunday afternoon at Murphey Soccer Field. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 3-2-1 following its second straight overtime match.
Sophomore forward Gianna DeSaverio scored the game-winner in the 98th minute to lift Arizona (4-2) to victory. It was the first goal UH has given up since its season-opening 1-0 loss to Washington. The Rainbow Wahine had posted four straight shutouts entering the match and the goal ended a string of nearly 500 straight shutout minutes by UH. It also marked just the second loss in UH's last 20 overtime matches.
Coupled with its win over Gonzaga on Friday night, the host Wildcats won the tournament. DeSaverio's game-winner came off assists by Savanah Levake and Laura Huylebroeck. Levake started the play with a long ball from the backline. Huylebroeck then flicked a header to a streaking DeSaverio who fired a right-footer from 10 yards out into the back of the net. The sophomore forward redeemed herself after missing an easy shot from close range just minutes earlier.
Arizona out-shot UH 13-12 for the match, yet the Rainbow Wahine tested the Wildcat defense with all but one of its shots on goal. Each team had its share of opportunities in regulation. In the second half, Arizona had multiple shots in the box that went either wide or high, and had another thwarted when Analisa Marquez had her shot cleared at the goal line by junior defender Lehua Wood.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats survived a barrage of UH shots in the final minutes of regulation. Ambree Ako sent a low-line laser from 25 yards out that a diving Chelsea McIntyre knocked away. On the ensuing corner kick Taryn Fukuroku blasted a 10-yard shot that was knocked out of the box by McIntyre, who made 11 saves. Wood then sent the rebound shot flying for the goal before McIntyre made another spectacular save by punching the ball over the crossbar.
UH concludes its three-match road trip when they travel to Flagstaff to face Northern Arizona on Tuesday, Sept. 12. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. MST.
