Box Score

WAIPAHU, O`ahu - The University of Hawai`i soccer team used a first-half explosion to defeat Kent State, 3-0, in the opening match of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic Friday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine (2-1-0) scored all three of their goals in the first half in cruising to their second straight victory.

The Rainbow Wahine were efficient, scoring a trio of goals on its first eight shots, including two scores in the first 14 minutes of play. UH got on the board early off the foot of team captain Jessica Domingo. After being set up with a drop pass from freshman Ambree Ako, Domingo launched a 30-yard shot that floated in the upper left corner of the goal, past the reach of Kent State goalkeeper Alicia Fernandez at the 9:48 mark.

The Rainbow Wahine struck again less than four minutes later on a corner kick when Kelli-Anne Chang found a wide-open Taryn Fukuroku, who headed in her first goal of the season. The UH scoring spree continued in the 31st minute when the Rainbow Wahine were awarded a penalty kick after Fukuroku was tripped in the box. Ako promptly put away the penalty kick for her second career goal and a comfortable 3-0 lead for UH.

The second half saw a flood of reserves take action as UH continued to play air-tight defense. The Golden Flashes (1-1-1) posted just two shots all match and their first shot didn't come until the final minute of the first half when they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box. All 23 players who suited for the Rainbow Wahine saw action, including the collegiate debuts of goalkeeper Brittney Aiwohi, forward Emily Chun, defender Larilyn Alota and midfielders Jodie Toyama, Dayna Omiya and Kelsie Look.

The action continues Saturday night at 7 p.m. when Kent State takes on Winthrop, while the Rainbow Wahine wrap up the tournament on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. with a meeting versus Winthrop.
